Drummer

The British Museum and the BBC
Africa Alive

A response to Africa Alive, I decided to sculpt an African woman playing the Sangoma base drum, played with a stick (the drum of South African medicine people ‘witch Doctors’) She has the power to beat the rhythm of her own life, a strong, powerful African woman.

Over 1000 adults and children helped to build this sculpture in 1 day, in conjunction with 10 volunteers. The materials of wire, bottle tops, plastic bags and bicycle inner tubes are typical recycled materials used in many South African crafts today.

Using these used and usually disposed of materials assists in educating and raising public awareness of recycling for participants and viewers.
