Second Mother
Acrylic Flourescent Paint on canvas, ultra violet Light
220cm x 50cm
This painting was created in South Africa in 1996, a piece I still really enjoy and so have included on the site.
This work looks as good in daylight as it does under an ultra violet light at night.
Background
This painting is of Vivian, Vivian has worked as a 'Domestic servant/maid' for Aubrey's family (seated in the background), for 38 years.
The title 'second mother' refers to the role that she and thousands of South African women occupy as domestic workers for white families.Even though she takes on the responsibilities of being nurturer, teacher and decision maker within the household, her status is that
of servant and not family.
